Surgical Treatment for Breast Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n

The modern approach aiming for cure and quality of life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite advances in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, the surgical treatment<\/strong> remains the foundation of addressing breast cancer.<\/strong> Removal of the initial focus of the disease is necessary to achieve a cure.<\/p>\n

What are the goals of surgical treatment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The surgical treatment of breast cancer<\/strong> aims at three main axes:<\/p>\n

  1. Removal of the tumor:<\/strong> It can be performed by lumpectomy<\/strong> (conservative surgery) or mastectomy (total removal of the breast), depending on the characteristics of the lesion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Staging of the disease:<\/strong> \u039c\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 Sentinel lymph node biopsy<\/strong> evaluates possible metastasis to the axillary lymph nodes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Aesthetic result:<\/strong> By using oncoplastic techniques,<\/strong> the aim is to restore the image of the breast in a way that enhances the woman's physical and psychological well-being.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Lumpectomy or Mastectomy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

        In today's era, the lumpectomy<\/strong> (removal of the part of the breast that has the lesion) is the usual choice. When combined with irradiation,<\/strong> offers oncological safety similar to mastectomy, with the advantage of preservation of the natural breast.<\/strong>
