Breast Density: What It Means and Why It\u2019s Important to Know<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dense breast<\/strong> is a term often used during mammological examination<\/strong> and especially in mammogram.<\/strong> It is not a disease, but mammographic feature,<\/strong> which affects diagnostic accuracy and monitoring strategy.<\/p>\n

What Is Breast Density?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A dense breast is mainly composed of glandular tissue<\/strong> (lobules and milk ducts) and less than fat. This tissue appears white on mammogram,<\/strong> which makes it more difficult to detect possible lesions. The density it has nothing to do with size<\/strong> or cruelty<\/strong> of the breast and is more common in women under 35 years of age.<\/p>\n

Breast Density Categories<\/strong><\/p>\n

Density is classified into four categories based on the ratio of fat to glandular tissue:<\/p>\n

  1. Almost entirely fatty<\/li>\n
  2. Scattered areas of fibroglandular density<\/li>\n
  3. Heterogeneously dense<\/li>\n
  4. Extremely dense<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Categories 3 and 4 are defined as dense breasts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Why Does Breast Density Matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Having dense breasts is a independent factor<\/strong>\u00a0risk of breast cancer.<\/strong> Studies show that women with extremely dense breasts have up to 4\u20136 times greater risk<\/strong> cancer incidence compared to women with fatty breasts.<\/p>\n

    In addition, white glandular tissue can hide damage,<\/strong> such as calcifications<\/strong> or masses,<\/strong> which also appear white, thus reducing the sensitivity of mammography.<\/p>\n

    What Should I Do If I Have Dense Breasts?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    If the mammogram shows that you have dense breasts, Don't panic.<\/strong> Your doctor will assess if necessary. additional imaging examination,<\/strong> based on it your medical history<\/strong> and of breast imaging findings<\/strong><\/p>\n
