Symptoms of Breast Cancer: What to Watch For

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, and in its early stages it can be not showing any symptoms. Many times the tumor is so small that it cannot be felt, but it is located in the mammography, this is why regular preventive check-ups are vital.

The Importance of Familiarity with Your Body

The knowledge of the normal appearance and feel of the breasts is the first step in early detection of any change. Although it does not mean that every change indicates malignancy, it is good to know what the most common symptoms of breast cancer:

Possible Symptoms of Breast Cancer

  • A palpable lump that wasn’t there before, with or without pain
  • Change in shape, size, or texture of the breast
  • Wrinkling of the skin in a specific spot on the breast
  • Redness, hardening, or thickening of the skin
  • New nipple retraction (inward pulling)
  • Nipple discharge, especially if bloody
  • Itching or irritation of the nipple or surrounding area
  • Swollen, red skin with tiny pits resembling “orange peel” (peau d’orange)

Breast pain is usually not indicative of cancer, though many women worry about it.

Don’t Ignore Changes — But Don’t Panic

The presence of one or more of the above It doesn't necessarily mean it's cancer. There are many benign breast diseases which may present a similar picture. However, any new symptom should be evaluated by a specialized breast surgeon, so that the correct diagnosis can be made and appropriate instructions can be given.

Remember: The combination of self-examination, clinical assessment and imaging is the "key" to early diagnosis of breast cancer.
