Oncoplastic Breast Surgery: Combining Oncologic Safety with Aesthetic Outcomes

The oncoplastic breast surgery is a modern approach to the treatment of breast cancer, which combines the principles of oncological surgery with her techniques plastic and reconstructive surgery. The main goal is the complete oncological removal of the tumor while simultaneously maintaining or improving the natural appearance of the breast.

What is Oncoplastic Surgery?

As today over 70% of breast cancer surgeries are lumpectomies (breast-conserving surgery), i.e. operations that preserve the breast, oncoplasty has emerged as an integral part of surgical treatment of breast cancer.

When the removal of the lesion leaves a significant gap or affects the shape of the breast, they are applied oncoplastic reconstruction techniques. Thus, the natural contour and symmetry of the breast is maintained, even when up to 50% of its volume is removed.

Symmetry and Aesthetic Outcome

In many cases, it is also recommended Symmetrical surgery on the healthy breast, such as rectification or reducing, in order to achieve aesthetic balance and harmony between the two breasts. This approach contributes positively to the psychology and self-image of the woman, while maintaining the safety of oncological treatment.

Advantages of Oncoplastic Surgery

  • It allows wider tumor resections without aesthetic distortion.
  • Reduces the chances secondary reoperation due to aesthetic problems.
  • It offers better quality of life after surgical treatment.
  • Adapts to particularities of each patient, with personalized design.

When is Oncoplastic Surgery Applied?

Oncoplastic surgery is indicated:

  • When the lumpectomy concerns a large volume or difficult anatomical location.
  • In growing or sagging mammographic structures, where there is a need for aesthetic correction.
  • In cases where the patient wishes to maintain breast shape with a natural effect.
