Nipple Reconstruction after Mastectomy
In many mastectomy cases, the nipple and areola are not preserved. Nipple reconstruction represents the final step in breast reconstruction and offers many women a sense of completeness and closure after their breast cancer journey.
When is nipple reconstruction performed?
Nipple reconstruction is usually performed 3 to 4 months after the last surgery breast reconstruction. This period allows the tissue to heal completely and the final shape of the new breast to stabilize.
What techniques are available?
There are several options for nipple reconstruction depending on the woman’s preferences and the specifics of each case:
- Surgical nipple reconstruction:
Using skin from the new breast area, a protruding nipple is created. In some cases, skin from another part of the body, such as the inner thigh, may be used.
- Nipple and areola tattooing:
After surgical reconstruction or independently of it, the woman can choose medical tattoo to reproduce the color and shades of the natural nipple. This technique offers extremely realistic and three-dimensional results. It is also a solution for those who do not want surgery, as it can be done without physical projection, only with aesthetic representation.
- Prosthetic nipple:
For women who do not want any invasive approach, there are prosthetic silicone nipples, which adhere to the skin with a special adhesive and are easily removed. They provide an alternative solution that combines flexibility and aesthetic satisfaction.
How do I choose the right method?
The choice depends on personal factors such as overall health, aesthetic expectations, and psychological readiness. Your breast surgeon will guide you based on your needs and possibilities.
Nipple restoration contributes substantially to psychological rehabilitation after breast cancer, enhancing the self-confidence and body image of the woman.
